Every year thousands of orangutans are killed and hundreds of others are left as homeless orphans because their rainforest habitat on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra is being destroyed at an alarming rate. Logging, uncontrolled fires and above all palm oil plantations, are responsible for the deforestation and devastation which is driving the orangutan to the brink of extinction.
The Orangutan Care Centre and Quarantine Facility near the village of Pasir Panjang in Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo was established, and is run by the Orangutan Foundation International (OFI - www.orangutan.org) to try and cope with the constant stream of new orphans. There are currently nearly 350 orphaned orangutans at the Care Centre, where they receive medical attention and loving care. The orangutans embark on a lengthy rehabilitation programme at the Centre, leading ultimately to release back into their wild habitat. The monthly expenses to run the Care Centre are over HKD300 000, and as OFI get no financial support from Governments or large grants from conservation organisations, they are desperately in need of assistance.
